GMtYIU.I & Co.'S (Reuter’s Agents) EXPRESS. ♦ Auckland. At the Police Court on Saturday, George Bnilay for stealing a pair of boots, was sontenced to three months’ imprisonment. John Conlon was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, with hard labour, and was also bound over to keep the peace for six months for assaulting his wife. The hearing of Haley’s case was resinned, and Mr MacCormick intimated his withdrawal, as prisoner's counsel, from the present case. Haley then conducted the case personally. Herbert Ashton deposed to prisoner's handwriting in a letter book.
Charles Williamson, managing editor of the Daily Southern Crons, deposed to the receipt of a letter describing the manner in which the kerosene store had been burned.
Thomas Russell gave strong evidence of identification of the handwriting of the letter to the Cross. He deposed to finding at Haley’s house an envelope similar to the one in which the letter was sent to the Cross.
John Smith and Frederick Batley gave positive evidence identifying the writing. Broliam read a letter from a lotterbook showing that Haley bad been at one time so reduced in circumstances as to contemplate breaking stones to keep his wife and children from starvation. Fortune afterwards took a favourable turn for him.
It is believed that the case will close to-day. Other experts in identifying handwriting were to have been called but it is thought their evidence will not be required, that already given being sufficiently strong. The evidenco in Haley’s case has been concluded, and the prisoner committed for trial.
