GOLD IN THE NORTH.
From time to time reports of gold discoveries in the North reach us ; and we have no doubt the precious metal is extensively diffused all over the Noithern districts. Rut up to the present time no find has been made of gold in such quantity as would lead to the conclusion that a payable goldfield exists in the North. We have occasionally seen samples of reef gold from the line of country lying
between the head of the Wairoa and llokianga river ; and two samples of stone from this locality were tested tho other day at tho Bank of New Zealand, with the following result: — No. 1 yielded a return at the rato of 1 dwt. Bgrs. to the ton.
No. 2 showed gold; but the quantity was inappreciable. At the same time wo arc of opinion that steps should bo taken to prospect this district thoroughly. The Provincial Government have at their disposal a sum of money for aiding prospectors ; and we suggest that a portion of it should be expended in equipping a reliable party of men, and paying them while engaged in the search for gold. Wc are aware that this would be a risky undertaking; the chances being that the prospectors would not do their work honestly. Still, it is worth trying ; and conditions might be made which would ensure a thorough search.— Herald.
