SAPPERS AND MINERS CORPS.
A numerously attended meeting was held last night, at the Governor Bowen Hotel, for the purpose of receiving the list of persons desirous of joining and making further arrangements as to the carrying out. of the resolutions passed at the previous meeting. Some 25 persons were present. Mr McCullough having been voted to the chair, said that lie understood that the meeting had been called for the purpose of carrying out resolutions proposed before, and lie might say that the object sought could he attained much the more speedily if those desirous of forming the proposed corps could manage to make the first monthly parade mentioned in the conditions on which they intended to join to-morrow (this) evening, when Colonel Ilarington would he present and see the number about to he added to the corps, so that if the Government were applied to for any money towards assisting the Sappers and Miners in forming their company, he (Col. Ilarington) would see on what basis they were working. Ten gentlemen then came forward and added their names to the list, making a total of 30 up to the present time. Mr Sandes then moved, “That all those present, and others whose names are on the list, he sworn in and appear on parade tomorrow.” —Seconded by Mr Luseombe, and carried unanimously.—Twenty-three gentlemen were then sworn in by the chairman, Lieut. McCullough,—Mr Sandes then proposed, *• That advertisements he inserted in the local papers, informing those members who were absent of tlieactiou taken, and requesting them to he sworn in to-morrow in time for the parade.”—Seconded by Mr J. Brown. — The gentlemen present were all requested particularly to be at the Volunteer Hall,
Shortland, at G p.m. punctually as failing the required number (25) being on parade, the whole of the previous arrangements would he liable to fall through. All those present promised to attend, and more than the requisite number were guaranteed by their friends. From the evident interest taken m this matter, and the persons who have joined, we feci confident that the whole tiling will be an undoubted sitccos.
