OPENING OF THE HOWICK BRIDGE.
The Herald of Monday says:—“Notices having been posted in the district that the new bridge between I’anmure and Ilowick was to be opened at -1 p.m. on Saturday last, by the chairman of the district, a considerable number of persons were present, and at 5 p.m. when the ’bus was passing, a good deal of dissatisfaction was expressed by those assembled, at the non-arrival of the chairman, or any one member of the Highway Board, who were expected to express an opinion and give a name to the new bridge. Many persons have tried their ’prentice hands during the last 24 years, at bridge building on this very spot, and vast sums have been expended, only to be swept away by the first rainfall, but here at last is a most durable and handsome stone bridge, a credit to the district and all concerned in its erection, and likely to last as long as the colony exists. Its opening was almost ignored by those whom it was expected would have taken a lively interest in its completion, and have expressed their satisfaction to Mr Martin Danaher for the creditable manner in which lie had fulfilled his contract. However, those present gave Mr Danaher a very cordial vote of thanks, and named it the “ Danaher Bridge,” and after three groans for those whom it was considered were in duty hound to attend, ut did not, the meeting dispersed.
