It is reported that the men on the Waikato railway have struck. The Sharemarket is dull: Caledonians, £32 ; Thames £8 15 ; Tookeys, £ls ; Tokatea, £4 12s. 9 p.m. The men on tho "Waikato Railway have struck because it was attempted to introduce the nine-hour system in place of eight hours. To-day the City Council voted £SOO fora temporary water supply. The 'Wallaby arrived from Wanganui to-day. The Wellington telegrams of January IS, state that Judge Johnstone is appointed Commissioner under the Whitaker and Lumlon Act. The resignation of Mr McPherson, member for the Waikato, is gazetted.
The Dunedin and. Southland Committee have awarded £2,700 to the contractors.
By a majority of two, the Presbyterian Synod requested Sutherland, of lhe first church, to resign, and censured his conduct:
