COROMANDEL.—LATEST MINING NEWS.
The Golden Point arc driving .a main tunnel on a large leader at a low level, from which very good stone is being taken Rich stone is also being broken out from the leader in the winze. There are about 20 tons of general stuff in paddock ready for crushing, which will be sent to the Nil Dcsperaiiduiu battery early next week.
The Working Miners arc still driving on their Large leader with continued good prospects. Very rich specimens are
occasionally met with, and the general stuff shows gold freely, and Avill give a good return. The Nil Despcrandmn are sloping out on the golden leader in the new tunnel, and expect to have another crushing in a Aveek or two. The leader continues to improve in size and appearance, and should give a return of least 2oz. to the ton ; 12 tons recently crushed gave a return of lfloz. gold, equal to loz. to the ton.
The AVhakaroa Company arc pushing forward the main tunnel towards the centre of the hill, and expect to cut the Flying Cloud leader very soon. A cross drive Avill also be started to prospect the ground toAvards the AVhakaroa Creek. The Independent has been getting very good gold out of the slopes in the_ upper Avorkings, and arc nearly ready for another crushing. A main tunnel Avill be commenced at once to cut the large leader at the creek level, which Avill give a large block of ground to Avork out. Captain Thomas expects to be in a position to commence operations on the old Kapaugaground in a month or sixAvceks. Large and powerful machinery for pumping and crushing av i 1 1 be erected, and a new shaft put down to a depth of at least 500 feet, Avhen cross drives will be {nit in to tap the Kapauga Avorkings. The Bi sin ark and French Republic arc driving on the leader in the main tunnel witli continued good prospects. The Van and other claims on the Kennedy’s Bay slopes are pushing forward their Avorks vigorously, and hope to cut golden leaders before long. The Van’s main tunnel is moav in between 200 and 300 feet.
Messrs Bennett and Co have decided upon erecting a large water-power battery at the junction of the two creeks below the Avatcrfall. A tramway to connect the claims Avith the battery will also be commenced forthwith. The Government intend driving a main tunnel through the range under the saddle, which Avill give all the claims on the Kennedy’s Bay side 500 feet lower level. It is to be hoped tho Avork Avill be put in hand Avithout delay, so as to have the tramway in Avorking order before the Avet weather sets in.
Favourable reports arc to hand from the various prospecting parties at work in the ranges and at Paul’s Creek. Messrs Moore and Co. are driving a low level tunnel to cut the leader from Avliich such good prospects Avcrc obtained near the surface. The ground is pretty easy to work and good progress is being made in consequence. Messrs Yelland and party arc at avoi’lc again on their claim at the head of the Driving Creek, and are progressing favorably. Very good prospects can be obtained on the surface. A main tunnel and cross drive Avill be put in to prospect the ground thoroughly. Mr Maiming and other gentlemen in Auckland are organising a party to prospect favorite localities on the Tokatea range. Messrs CallaAvay ami party arc still at Avork on their claim at Manaia, and report getting very fair prospects by Avnsliing. They have seen no gold in tiiu solid stone as yet.
The Nil Despcrandmn battery cleaned up yesterday for the Specimen Hill claim. Forty-two tons put through the stampers yielded 78 oz. 14 dwl. of gold—nearly 2 oz. to the ton.
The survey of Coromandel Harbor, which was ordered for the purpose of ascertaining the best method ol: extending Avliarfagc accommodation for the district, is now complete, and plans and report on the subject Avill, avc are informed, be submitted to the Government without delay. —Coromandel Mad.
