MINING.
Black Anuel. —Crushing has been resinned at the Manukau battery, and ihe manager reports that be can easily crush continuously. The whip from the crosscut down the winz.o works admirably, the horse bringing up 28 trollys per hour, each with a full b ticket on, and so large quantities of s*on e can be brought out. The reef is about Four feet wide towards the Whan, when} driven on from the bottom of the win:2c, and about 18 inches towards the Flyi ug Cloud claim, and shows good gold, freely as it is broken down. The win:;c is 80 feet deep, so that there that amoun.t of backs to break out for the whole length of the claim. AVc fully expect to sec some good and regular returns now tha t they have got a fair start. In a short time five head more will be put on tho stuff at the battery.
Una. —Si nking the winze from the New May Moon, ground is progressing well, and a drive has been started from the Loyalty to meet it. Until this is done, and communication opened, there will not be stuff enough to keep tin; company’s battery going, so it has stopped crushing for the present. It has taken them so much longer than they expected to get the low level tunnel m, as right from the start the country lias been very hard indeed, and progress consequently slow. Inverness. —The crushing for this claim, which has been going on for some days, with 10 head, at the Prince Alfred battery, is shaping well for a good return. Two hundred and fifty-seven ounces of amalgam were taken off the plates for the last week’s run, which must be considered good. The reef in the face of the drive, though split at the bottom by a sandstone horse, is solid above, and looks well there, as it does also where it is being stoped out. The winze going down from the Don Pedro end of the mine has been discontinued, on account of the foul air, but the manager lias entered a cross-cut from the Kuramii Hill Tunnel, to out the reef under the winze, and he Avill rise on it. He expects to break through at about 20 feet up. When this is done, and it will only take a few weeks more to complete, he will he enabled to get much larger quantities of shone, and put on more stamps at the battery. Central Italy. —The erection of this company’s machinery is now rapidly approaching completion. The fly-wheel was hung yesterday and properly fixed ; it is 14 feet in diameter. The boiler is now ready to place in position for being built in, and the engine-house will be finished as soon as this is done, so that in four or five weeks at the farthest everything will be in readiness to start work. F.veiything about the machinery lias been well and strongly fixed, the horses vm which the engine flywheel and drums work being most securely stayed and b'ound together with large iron bolts. The whole work reflects credit on the manager, Mr Stanning, under whoso personal superintendence everything lias been carried out from the commencement. The shaft and crank for the pumps will not be fixed at present, as he intends to sink the shaft some 40 feet or so deeper, so as to be able to fix the cistern, &c\, for the plunger at once. Golden Calf. —They have now driven about 60 feet from the shaft at the 252 ft. level, in a northerly direction. The country through which they arc driving is splendid looking stuff, containing plenty of metal and a good many nice looking quartz veins, and from the indication in general they expect to be on to some lode in -a very short time. The inflow of water is not at all heavy. The engine stopped on Saturday night and started again at 10 o ’cloi/c on Sunday night, and all the accumulated water was out in time for the shift to go on to work. Standard. —A crushing for this company was commenced at Vickery’s battery yesterday morning. Of the probable yield it would be premature to hazard a confident opinion, the appearance of the jdates would, however, justify the belief that it will not be less than the usual average of one and a half ounces to the ton. Since we last reported on the prospects of this company, a new survey lias _lieen made of the lease, and a valuable addition of surplus ground been made to its property immediately on the line of the present leaders, and embracing a considerable area in the direction of the underlie. An outlay of less than £IOO would confer advantages on the company which can hardly be overrated, i.r., if made in the proper direction, and for the purpose of connecting the various levels. I The depth between the upper level and j the lower cannot, be less than 200 feet. I Splendid yields of as high as Doz. to the ! ton were formerly obtained from the i leader on the low level. From one ton j 670 z. were obtained, and very little work | has been done upon it since that period, : and nothing since it has been in the hands 1 of the present company. The middle and I upper levels, as lias been lately shewn, | give good returns. 4Ye re they all connected and opened out, there would be no | valid reason, assuming the future yield ! to be equal to the present, that this should 1 not rank among the dividend-paying cora- ■ panics.
Otaoo. —The crushing of 10 tons as a trial from the No. 2 lode now going on at the Tararu Battery will be finished by this evening. The result cannot yet be estimated.
