GENERAL GOVERNMENT GAZETTE.
We ex ract the following from the N. Z. Gazette of the 29th December:— Notice is given cautioning persons in tho habit of giving and accepting unstamped receipts as acquittance for money paid by cheque, under the belief that the stamp borne by the cheque exonerates the receipt from liability to stamp duty. Such receipts, it states, are inadmissible as evidence of the payment of money, every person signing, or causing the signature of any such receipt is liable to a penalty of £lO for every such offence. The halfyearly statement of the affairs of the Masonic, Moanataiari, John O’Groats, Ashley, Goldfinch, Cock-a-Doodle, Pride of the Moanataiari, Una, Unicorn, All Nat ions, Caledonian, Golden Grown, Kuranui, Brighton, Juanita, Kuranui Hill Tunnel, Long Drive, Tui and Cuckoo, and Pride of Parnell GoldminiggCompanies are also published. The notification of the election of Mr P. A. Philips as Mayor of Auckland ; also that Mr T. Kirk has been appointed collector under the Census Act Amendment Act, 1867. It is notified that three months from the 20th of December last the reservation upon 584 acres in the town of Cambridge East, reserved for a redoubt site will be removed. The resignation of Ensign F. Battley of No. 2 company A.R.V. is gazetted. The names of persons to whom Crown grants for lands in the township of Gisborne are to be made, in accordance with existing contracts are also published.
