VOLUNTEERS v. T.C.C

The return match of the Volunteers against the Club was played on Saturday, and resulted in favour of the former with eleven runs to spare. Only one innings was played on each side. The T.C.C. having lost the toss, were sent to the wickets, Schofield and Warded 1 being the first to appear. They both played remarkably well for some time, Warded being bowled by Haddock, junr., after a good hitting innings of 17, lie was, however, missed rather easily when lie had only scored four. Clay forth and Dixon, from whom great things were expected,

did not trouble the scorer much, getting only one between them. Lascelles played a first rate innings for 13, all well gotq and was unfortunately.run out when well set. Samuels hnd Beere made 8 a piece in a short time, and the total of the innings with 7 extras was 60, a far smaller score than ought to have been got considering the bowling. Alston and Pulleine first showed up for the “Vols,”but the former had soon to retire. Barnett took his place and took two balls from Clayforth, the second being too much for him. Newby and Alpe followed, Pulleine playing well. Newby put his leg before his wicket and Alpe played one on to bis wicket when ho had scored 7. Maddoek jun., now joined Pulleine, and betwee . the two the score was slowly but surely run up. Pulleine hit his wicket after getting 18 rnus in good style, though he gave at least one good chance to cover point, which was refused. Maddoek sen., joined his brother, and seemed determined to wake the field up, who were rather quiet on it. He succeeded in doing so effectually, and was run out in attempting to stcai one, the ball being returned very sharply. Crawford managed tho hit of the day—one of Clayforth’s fast ones glancing off his bat into the ditch and disappearing in the water. He got 5 for it. Their innings closed for 51 runs and only 29 extras, thus making them 80, or 11 more than the T.C.C.

The Club played a weak team, not one of their good bowlers being on the ground; and it will be seen from the score that the match was bowled away—l4wides and 14 byes being given. Maddoek jun'., for the “ Vols,” bowled very successfully indeed, scoring 7 wickets to his credit, Barnett only getting two. Lascelles for the T.C.C. was very fair, getting 4 wickets, and Clayforth was far too fast for the ground and the longstopping, and lie bowled 11 widcs, Lascelles giving 3. Alpe’s longstopping was first class, only two balls getting clean past him all the time. The deciding match (the Club having won the first) will be played before the end of the season.
