MINING.
Caledonian. The men went below again all right on Friday night and Saturday morning, and the searching upon their coming up from below is to be continued as stringently as ever. No more gold was taken out up to Saturday evening, as the run was not touched, but some more may bo expected to-day. The yield for the past week is only 2380 z., 119 oz. were sent in from Tararu, and the same quantity from the company’s own battery. This lodgment makes a total return since the last dividend of 2,041 oz. Should the specimens be crushed, there will doubtless be a large increase in this week’s return, and, from present appearances, a dividend may soon be looked forward to. It was found necessary to make some repairs to the pumping gear below, so that a slight delay occurred, but in a few hours everything was in working order again. Tookky Company. —No fresh news of importance is to hand respecting the find in the reef in this company’s ground. As stated on Saturday, the gold could not form a portion of any run, but was simply a good colour seen in the reef, though this in itself is encouraging, showing that the precious metal is in the reef, though perhaps in a very small quantity just at this particular spot. Work is proceeding all well, and good progress is being made along the reef. Golden Crown.—The manager lodged on Saturday on behalf the company, 420 z. lGdwt. of melted gold, the result of a crushing of 60 tons of stone at the company’s battery. He also lodged 21oz. 12 dwt. melted gold on behalf of the tributes, the result of 35 tons, also crushed at the Company’s battery. Una. —A small lodgment of 250 z. 10 dwt., the result of two day’s crushing, was lodged to this company’s credit on Saturday. The quality of the stuff put through was very inferior to the usual run of the stone.
Californian. The total weight of melted gold resulting from the late crushing is liißoz. 18dwt., it having lost 2oz. in tlm reducing. Crushing has been again started with every prospect of a good return.
Multum-IN'-Paiivo. —Another crushing for this company has just been completed at Weston’s machine. The quantity of stone put through was 2G tons, giving a most satisfactory return of 590 z. of gold. To be added to this there is a parcel of 750 z., the product of the specimens picked from the general stuff, which makes a total of 1820 z., or at the rate of soz. to the ton. A more economical style of working is now being introduced into the mine, and a low level tunnel is being carried in, and if the quality of the stone continues anything like what it has been up to the present, some good dividends ought to be paid to the shareholders. Cyci.ops, Utteii Tauaru.— The low level drive which is being entered to cut the reef has been completed for a distance of 188 feet, and the country is first class working stuff, so that there is every prospect of its soon being in as far as Iho lode. From the excellent prospects which have already been obtained from this reef, and the fact that the farther they sank the winze the better and richer the reef was, the shareholders arc very sanguine as to the ultimate result of their undertaking, but the want of a road is a tremendous drawback to them, and also to all clairnholders in the district. The Tararu road, so nicely promised, has not made so much progress as was expected. Perhaps the Government intend to wait for the next wet season, ns the ground nicy then be softer, and the work be more easily done than at present, or perhaps they don’t care whether the road is made or not. Present appearances favor the latter supposition.. Brack Forest. —We saw a fine parcel of about *2olbs of specimens on Saturday, which were taken from the leader in this claim, next to George Stevenson. The next crushing which will shortly take place, as besides the fine parcel of specimens now on hand, there are some thirty tons of good crushing dirt in the paddock. This leader is the same as the George Stevenson people are working on, and it speak, ;t well for its quality that the gold is so well distributed through it.
The following returns of gold arc to hand: —Caledonian, 2380 z ; Una, 250 z 12dwts ; Californian, 108 oz 18dwts; Victory, lloz odwts 12grs; Whau, 81oz 3dwts 12grs ; Multum-in-Parvo, 590 z.
