Bennett, of the ‘Aurora,’ reports that lie saw a strange steamer engaged in kidnappibg natives at the Solomon Islands.— October 21: At Wagga an unfortunate old man, named William Blyth, was refused admission into the hospital, and died shortly afterwards.—Last Thursday week a terriffic hailstorm burst over the' neighbourhood of Junee, near Wagga Wagga. The hailstones are said to have been the size of pigeons’eggs, and to have covered the ground for some time like anew to the depth of several inches.—On the 15th instant, an infant child, named Christie, was saved from being crushed to death by the courage and presence of mind of an engine driver. The child was snatched from under the wheels of the train at the Newcastle terminus.—A man, named Hawkey, at Tomerong, in the Shoalhaven district, was shot at by bis own daughter, on the 10th instant. The man is not dead, but seriously wounded. The girl is in custody.; Brisbane, October 17.—William Harper, Alfred Gadds, Reed, and a blackfellow, were drowned on Friday in attempting to enter Nerang Creek in a small boat. — October 18 : Captain Rae reports the loss of the barque ‘ Corypheus ’ nearly seven weeks ago, at Ailee, in Marshall’s Archipelago. -The vessel was becalmed and sucked ashore by the current. The crew, in two boats, made'for Sandy Cape ; they parted company four days after ; the men suffered great privations, catching water in the boat sails, and subsisting on provisions damaged by sea water. The boat did not sight a single vessel. No tidings of the other boat. The ‘ Corypheus ’ bilged on a reef, and the ship and cargo are completely lost. Five of the crew elected to remain on the island. The ship and cargo were the property of Dalgetty, Blackwood and Co., of Melbourne. Melbourne, October 12. — His Excellency Earl Belmoi-c called by the s.s. ‘Derwent’ to-day, to pay his promised visit to his Excellency Mr. Du Cane.— It is expected that his Excellency Lord Canterbury will leave for England in February next. —The Anglican Church is taking steps to secure the election in their own hands of future bishops.—Foam is coining into favour for the Cup.—October 14 : Mr. Edward Cope, late a member of Parliament, died last night.—Pleurapneumonia has appeared in the Ballarat district.—There was a good attendance at the Hunt Club Races, consideringthe rain. The Governor was present. —October 16 : The speculation in the Sandhurst mine increases ; the Government laid on a special train on Saturday for Sandhurst, at 10 o’clock ; other speculators waited an hour later, and hired another special train. Quinn lias been sentenced to death for the murder of a Chinaman, at Myrtleford.— The residence of the Zavistowski Sisters was burglariously entered on Saturday night, and jewellery to the amount of £3OO stolen.—October 17: The City Council passed a by-law prohibiting the use of traction in the day time.—Messrs. Reid and Baines have obtained first prizes for the designs for the Eastern Market. Mr. Flanagan obtained second prize.—The Railway Bill is being considered in Committee of the Council. The Engineer-in-Cbief favours the present gauge, and considers that the saving contemplated on all the lines by having a narrow gauge will only amount to £70,000. — In the Assembly, the postal scheme as agreed to by the Conference, was carried by a largo majority. —Mr Rutledge, formerly member of Parliament, was thrown from his buggy last night when leaving Belfast. His skull was fractured, and he lies in a dangerous state. —The Reedy Creek Station, with 11,000 sheep, and 120 acres of freeholu, on which is erected the head station, realised at auction 18s per head. —A large meeting was held yesterday, in White’s Rooms, of the clergy and laity of the various denominations, for the purpose of opposing the movement on foot to exclude the Bible from the Government schools. There were no ministers belonging to the Independents present. The Rev. Mr Ewbank succeeds the late Mr Ibbetson to the Anglican cure of St. Bartholomew’s Church »t Norwood.
