By the arrival of the s.s. ‘ Keera,’ at Auckland, we have received Australian papers to the 7tli. Sydney, October 7. Another charge against the Rev. Dr. Bailey, for illegally marrying a person under age, was heard to-day. Judgment reserved. The Government has reappointed the Goldfields Commission to consider the question of permanent water supply. The Governor has notified that all applicants for the public service must pass a University examination. Adelaide, October 7. The Legislative Assembly meets tomorrow at 2 o’clock, to receive the report of the Intercolonial Conference. The convent of St. Joseph’s has been broken up by Bishop O’Neil, and the sisters dispersed. There is great indignation amongst the Catholics at the Bishop’s proceedings. A company is being formed to prospect the Northern Territory for gold. Hobaiitown, October 6. A girl named Barker, an orphan school apprentice, was found drowned in the Derwent this morning. She left her home last night. Melbourne, October 7. The report of the Intercolonial Conference was laid on the table of the Legislative Assembly yesterday. A deputation of unemployed waited on the Minister of Railways, asking for work. In the betting field Hamlet is backed at 150 to 100 for the Derby. A fair amount of other business done, Irish King being the most fancied. For the cup the fancy of the day was Lord of Lynn, who was backed at 2000 to 40, and will probably see shorter odds. Barbelle is very firm in the market, the highest price to be obtained about her is 100 to 7. Mr. Tait’s Stable is in great favottr. The Crack Pyrrhus being very firm at 100 to 17. Wellington, October 19. REDUCTION OF THE GOLD DUTY. duty on gold should be reduced "to 2s. per ounce was negatived on a division of 28 to 21.
