KAUWAERANGA DISTRICT BOARD, YESTERDAY.
A meeting of the above Board was held last evening at Mr Porston’s office. Present,Mr Burgess in the chair, and Messrs Mills, Scott, Lipsey, Cameron (Engineer), and Mr Pcrston, secretary. Correspondence was read from the Deputy Superintendent stating that Mr Millett had been instructed to take the levels of the streets in the district and to make a road to the cemetery. Correspondence was read from Messrs Sutor relative to laying down rails for the tramway to connect Grahamstown with Shorthand on certain terms (which have been previously published), and also from Messrs Nees and Co., offering to construct the work on tho same terms as those offered to the Waiotalii Board. The Chairman said Dr Ki'gour had expressed to him his disapproval of the line going along Pollen street, but had no objection to its going along the beach. Mr Lipsey said lie thought most of the inhabitants thought the proposed line would be a'great public benefit. It was stated that Mr Nccs was anxious to have an answer as early as possible, as lie wanted to leave New Zealand by the ‘Hero’ to make arrangements. It was resolved to postpone the matter until next day, so that some of the members might have an opportunity of conferring with the Waiotalii District Board on the matter. The Chairman said there was a paragraph in that day’s Guardian reflecting upon the Board in reference to the state of the Hapc Creek Road. The statement was not correct, and lie thought more caution should be exercised before such paragraphs were inserted in any paper. Mr Lipsey said lie thought it was not worth while to take further notice of the matter, which then dropped, Correspondence was read relative to the case of Workman v. Burgess from Messrs MacCormick and McKcchnie, asking for further information relative to the terms of the native lease. Tenders were submitted for making certain new portions of Willoughby-street and Ivaraka Road. The tenders of J. Quinliven, jit £l9B, for Karaka Road (15 chains); and for Willoughby-street at £lB2 ;(13 chains) were accepted. It was agreed that Mr Gurney’s contract for Mary-street (previously before the Board) should be accepted. Mr Brown, of the Willoughby Hotel applied for leave to construct a tramway from the Beach along Willoughby-street to the Hapc Creek tramway. The application was received by the Board. It was agreed to purchase the book and board in use in connection with the old pound, for the sum of £3 2s, if they were found suitable. There were no appeals from the assessment roll, and it was accordingly ordered to be signed by the Chairman. The Secretary was instructed to commence collecting the rates forthwith, and to employ a man to deliver notice at each house, commenoing on Monday.
