AMUSEMENTS.

Academy of Music. —“ Formosa ” still retains its popularity, as evinced by the well-lilled house last night. The piece went off with the same cchit as ever, and it must be very gratifying to tlie management to see the public appreciation of a play which certainly holds one of the highest plays in modern dramatic literature. Apropos with the talented article which appeared in the Evening Star some few days ago, Mr. Jones came forward, and iu a very neat speech, requested the audience (or rather a portion of it) to discontinue smoking. lie trusted he should not have to make this appeal again. These remarks were received in very good part, and wc are pleased to say that tho nauseous habit was at once discontinued, to the intense relief of tho performers ; for when the wind is from a particular quarter, the clouds of smoke which roll on to the stage render efficient elocution quite a task. It must be remembered that though Grahamstown is a goldfield, still we aro making such progress now in the social scale that smoking should bq . considered (in a theatre) quite a plebeian and heathen habit. We have entered somewhat fully into this subject; but the question has been such a crying nuisance for so long, that we have hailed with delight this step in the right direction. Theatre Royal. —There was not a very numerous audience last night to witness Torn Taylor’s splendid drama entitled “ The Ticket of Leave Man,"which usually draws good houses. The piece was well placed upon the boards, and very creditaqly acted. Miss Bowring as May Edwards, and Mr J. B. Steele as Robert Bricrly, were well up in their respective parts, and were also ably supported by Mr and Mrs Howard, Mescrs Joyce, Keogh, and South. We trust the company will have a good house at the American Theatre, Shortland, this eveuing.
