Correspondence was received from the Crown Lauds Department that town sections numbers 234, 235, 240, 241 (Public Building Reserve No. 2999) would shortly be offered for lease, and the other Crown lands sections will be put up for sale by public auction, on dates to be fixed. scavenger’s report. The scavenger’s report was read and discussed. Mr Ward asked why it was one man who owed 2s 6d for scavenger’s fee was sued for same, when others, who owed about £l, were let off? The chairman said that it was only those who would not fall in with the idea, and refused to pay who were considered the worst cases and were sued j the amount was not considered. OVERSEER’S REPORT, The overseer’s report on work done was read. It mentioned that a lamp-post had been knocked over by a party, who was known.

Mr Maslin brought up the question of whether it necessary to strike a rate this year. The board had been paying away to the Llaibor Board, Charitable Aid Board, etc., out of capital and rents, ami they lust their subsidy through not striking a rate. Perhaps it would bo as well to take the preliminary to strike a rate, but hold over the collecting of it till after the Government had brought down their Local Governmgiß Bill.
On the motion of Mr Maslin it was decided that the ;Geraldiue Council be applied to |for a copy of the rate roll for the Geraldine Town District. VOLUNTEER HAIL. Mr Ward thought that the board should try to meet the wishes of ratepayers, and if they could not see their way at last meeting to grant a petition for four lamps for back streets they would perhaps grant that one lamp be erected at the corner near Mr Kingston s blacksmith’s shop. He would move to that effect.
Mr Walton seconded the resolution. The chairman said the matter had been thoroughly threshed out at the last meeting, and it had been definitely decided not to erect any more lamps in the back streets, as the board’s funds would not allcw it. Mr Maslin pointed out that no fresh motion could be passed till the previous resolution re lamps is rescinded, LAMP-LIGHTING. Only one tender was received for the position of lamp-lighter, that of M. Hansen at £57 7s 6d per annum. The chairman said that Mr Hausen did his work well, and they could not do better than accept hia tender. The tender was accepted.
