A numerously signed petition from the residents of Rangitata was read, praying the board to form the road which runs from t'.ie Main South Road to the Rangitata by the top way, on the cooperative system, as there was no work in the district, and the road was almost impassable in the winter timo. Another letter was also received from the Crown Lands Commissioner relating to the same work. The following resolution was passed : “Ist, That the road in question is not much if at all required; 2nd, that the funds in hand are insufficient for the work; 3rd, that for such works as are sanctioned, when funds are in hand the board will favourably consider letting the work in the manner asked for.”— Carried. overseer’s REPORT. The overseer’s report was read as follows: « I have the honour to report for the past mouths as follows: —Tenders have been invited for cleaning drains on Middle Swamp, Parke’s canal and dyne’s road. The concrete culvert on the road running past Mr Gillies’, that was commenced last month has been completed, and as I found that the wooden culvert in the next gully was decayed, I have substituted a concrete culvert for it. Three or four days work with a team is now required to reduce the hills and fill over the culverts. I have had the best of the old timber that had accumulated in the yard cut 'into sizes suitable for use as band railing, etc. The work asked for by Mr McCully, deepening a drain on Rolleston’s road, is nearly completed. On further examination of tho bridge ky Stewart’s, I find that it will not be advisable to put in new girders, as the piles not very sound below the ground. I would recommend that the bridge be entirely replaced with one having concrete abutments. Messrs Chaftey Bros., are now hauling grain along the Bp worth road from Waitohi with their heavy engine; the bridges on this road are not strong enough to carry this load with safety,—l am, etc , “ F. Archer.” TENDERS. The following tenders were opened and considered :—• Contract No. 19, cleaning drain Middle Swamp Road—B.
