THE SOUTHEND MURDER.
London, Nov. 15. James Cassham Read has been sentenced to death in connection with the murder at Southend in June. Wellington, Nov. 16. The murder referred to in to-day's cable took place on June 24th near Prittlewell, Southend. The victim was a Miss Florence Dennis, aged 23, daughter of a harness maker, and the condemned man is aged 35, married, with eight children, and employed as a clerk at one of the London docks. He was courting deceased, asserting that he was single, and was seen in her company on the night of the murder. The body was found the following day with a gunshot wound in the left ear, lying in a brook, the murder apparently having taken place in a wheat field, and the body being dragged to the spot where it was found. Read bore a good character.
