SUPREME COURT.
At Auckland Mrs Mary Alice Jenkins was acquitted of the charge of breaking and entering, but sentenced to two years on a charge of receiving goods knowing them to be dishonestly obtained. At Wellington Andeline Jewson, accused of stealing a watch from James Wallace, was found guilty, receiving 3 months. John Street, for larceny, got 9 months. George Anderson, a Masterton storekeeper, was charged with leaving the colony with certain property in his possession belonging to his creditors. The Chief Justice said that there was not sufficient evidence' to convict accused, and without retiring the jury found a verdict of not guilty. There are other charges against Anderson. An old man named Christopher Lockyer was found guilty of keeping a brothel in Mulgrave street next to St. Paul's pro-Cathedral, and was remanded for sentence. At Dunedin William Marr was acquitted of burglary and indecent assault at Wairuna. William Kennedy, Michael Kelly, and James Blue were arraigned for breaking and entering the Universal Hotel and stealing £3 6s and an iron safe, etc. The jury, after ten minutes' retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty. An unusual circumstance then occurred. On the judge telling the prisoners that they were discharged, they stepped down from the dock and mixed with the crowd which was leaving the court. The gaol officials then realised that Blue had not completed the sentence he was serving and a hasty search was made, but he had disappeared. The police captured Blue shortly afterwards. He stated that he had had a couple of drinks and was satisfied. In the case of John Hansen, charged with theft, the jury were unable to agree, and were discharged. Henry Herbert Harding was found guilty of assault, and sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
