LICENSING COMMITTEE MEETINGS.
The Waipawa Licensing Committee granted all renewals and transfers, but refused to grant any II o’clock licenses. At the Wellington licensing meeting fifty-four renewals, including three transfers, were applied for. All were granted with the exception of three, viz., the Provincial, the Jubilee, and Cattell’s (known as Roland’s). The inspector reported a great improvement in the conduct of some of the houses, and mentioned that 65 samples of liquor had been obtained and analysed, and found to be unadulterated, with the exception of two, which contained too much water. Mr Martin, S.M., in an address advised licensees to keep the law strictly, in the course of his remarks stating that the committee desired to be distinctly understood that without warping and without the slightest hesitation, although the licensee would have every fair play, the license of a house that was in the opinion of the committee conducted in an improper manner would be promptly cancelled. The Ashburton licensing meeting renewed all the existing licenses and granted I all the transfers asked for, but < * l ' , „ houses at 10 o’clock. ~ oßed aU Xho Lvtt* u _ .winon Licensing Committee notice of its intention to refuse licenses to the Railway, Cambridge, and Crown Hotels. All the other applicatior s were granted. Extension of hours till 11 o’clock was granted to hotels in the town of Lyttelton only. The Taieri Licensing Committee meeting at Mosgiel adjourned seven applications, intimating that three of these would be refused renewals, which is the maximum number under the reduction and vote. One accommodation license was taken away.
