The insurgent war vessel Republica rammed a Loyalist transport vessel proceeding to Santos. Five hundred out of 1100 on board were drowned. The Loyalist forts fired on the departing insurgent vessel, and killed forty of the crew. A balloon is waiting at Santa Catherina to drop explosives on insurgent warships. The Brazilian Government have purchased six American steamers, which are to be converted into cruisers, and have also purchased stores costing 4,000,000 dollars. It is believed to be likely that the auxiliary fleet will entrap Admiral Mello in Bio.
