ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Nov. 1. Probate has been granted in the estate of Montefiore, at £1,250,000. The bulk of the property is bequeathed to his daughter. Paris, Nov. 1. Mr Gore Daly, grandson of Sir Dominick Daly, was killed in a hotel in the city to-day through falling down an elevator. Vienna, Nov. 1. The Emperor announces that no internal crisis or increased expenditure will alienate his support from the Triple Alliance. Constantinople, Nov. 1. By a fire in a mosque at Damascus, damage to the extent of £600,000, was done. Washington, Nov. 31. The Sherman Repeal Act was passed after a continual sitting of 41 days and 61 days debate. There were many bitter scenes towards the closing of the debate. Owing to the Senate’s amendment in favour of bi-metallism, the Repeal Bill will be re-introduced in the House of Representatives directly. President Cleveland is accused of selling the position of Secretary to the United States Embassy in London, for £IO,OOO, to a political friend of the Government.

Sydney, Nov, 1. The revenue for the last mouth shows an increase of £60,000 as compared with the corresponding period of last year. Melbourne, Nov, 1. Deeming’s effects were sold by auction to-day, and realised fancy prices. The chief purchaser was a London curiohunter, Adelaide, Nov. 2. Mr William Redmond has arrived here on private business. In reply to an interviewer he said he did not know Mr Gladstone’s intentions, but the Irish party would take care that the Premier did not drop Home Rule for long in order to push on his own Liberal measures. “We will not keep him,” says Mr Redmond, “if he does.” He is confident that there will have to be a general election, and is hopeful that Home Rule will again have a majority, but sees no possibily of the two sections of the Irish party uniting. The Taxation Bill has passed through committee in the Assembly. The proposal to exempt life insurance companies from income tax was negatived. The Land Bill has passed the final stages in the Assembly. Perth, Nov. 1. Two prospectors have died from want of water, after proceeding 25 miles on the road to Coolgardie. Five others were found in a nude condition suffering from insanity brought on by thirst. It is believed that numbers of men have perished in attempting to reach the field.
