TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The regular monthy meeting of above was held on Tuesday evening, Present— Messrs Salmond (chairman), P. McCaskill, F. Hooper, A. Russell, G. Leveus, D. Taylor, J. Grant and J. W. Miles.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Correspondence was read from, The Secretary Education Board, notifying that on receipt of voucher the suggested alterations to the spouting of the school would be paid for by the board. headmaster’s report. “The Chairman Temuka School Committee.

Sir,— l have the honour to report re the above school. The attendance for the past mouth has been pretty satisfactory, the average being ; 290, with a roll number 340, I desire to draw the Committee’s attention to the fact that the parents of Temuka do not seem to be thoroughly alive to their children’s interests, a fact evidenced by their withdrawing their children from school at too early an age, and before a sufficiently high standard has been reached. We have only five (5) pupils in the sixth standard, and eighteen (18) in the fifth standard, whereas, in a well-balanced school, with our roll number, we should have at least fifteen (16) in the former, and thirty (30) in the latter standard. I lay these facts before the Committee in view of the examination, which will take place early in next month, so that an effort may be made through the Press to direct parents attention to this matter. It is a penny-wise-pound-foolish policy to stop the education of children at the third or fourth standards. I enclose a memo, of requisites.—l have, etc., “D. Ferguson, “ Head Master.”

The chairman and secretary were authorised to procure 500 admission forms applied for. The Committee, equally with the head master, regretted the withdrawal of pupils from the school shortly after passing the upper standards, and trusted that parents would realize the importance of their children taking advantage of the opportunities afforded them of securing a good education. VISITOR’? REPORT.

Mr Russell, on behalf of Mr McCaskill and himself, reported that the school buildings were in an efficient state of repair. Their attention had been drawn to the small attendance in the higher classy. The head master had stated that the garden ground would shortly be laid off for the children. They trusted that the extra spouting required' would be supplied at once, as until it was the lavatories could not be utilised.

The chairman reported that after consultation with Messrs Miles and Taylor he had authorised the closing of the school for Show Day. Mis action was approved. Messrs Grant and Bates were appointed visitors for the month. One account to the amount of £2 10s was passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
