AFFAIRS AT THE CAPE.
Capetown, October 20. The rains which have been impeding the operations of the troops have ceased. The Chartered Company's officials are confident Lobenguela will be defeated owing to the superior equipment of their forces. Mr Rhodes does not want Imperial help. Sir H. Loch has cabled to Lord Ripon that the local volunteers are ample for all requirements in the way of troops. Later. News has been received that a column from Fort Victoria had engaged the enemy and defeated them. The fight took place at Indianos, midway between Fort Salisbury and Bulawayo, and 100 of the enemy were killed. The Fort Salisbury column also defeated the enemy near the same place. The two columns then united. The Chartered Company's column also took an active part in opposing the Matabeles' advance. Captain Campbell was shot through the leg and died. No other casualities are reported among the Company's forces. News from Matabeleland states that Major Adams' column is within thirty miles of Bulawayo. The other columns have effected a junction within sixty miles, and are believed to have occupied the passes leading to Bulawayo.
