Capetown, Oct. 13,

A large force of Matabeles bars Commandant Raffo’s advance from Tette. Numbers of Matabeles are hovering around the Port Victoria column. News has been received that the column from Fort Victoria aad the Chartered Company’s force have united, and form a strength of 800 men. Major Adams with hia men is hurrying to take up a position in Patai, where Captain White holds a strongly entrenched position. John Willoughby is in command of the Victoria and Chartered Company’s men and intends to place a strong cordon around the basis of the Matabele, aajppliea. Sir F. Carrington considers that Lobenguela is a clever savage and his warriors bloodthirsty devils. To be on the safe side the company’s forces ought to be increased. Oct. 16. Heavy rains have been falling, which, it is feared, will impede the movements of the British forces in Mashonaland. Sir H. Loch invited those who were willing to serve against the Matabeles to come forward, in response to which the whole contingent of the Black Watch volunteered, beside others from Johannesburg. Oct. 17. The Government have selected 100 men of the Black Watch and other volunteers for service in Mashonaland.
