THE DIRECT VETO.
Mr E. Robson, the secretary of the Geraldine Welcome Retreat Good Templar Lodge, has received the following replies to the resolutions sent by him from the Geraldine direct veto meeting to the Premier of New Zealand and Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, M.H.R. From the Hon. Mr Seddon: “The decision of the Government on this important question will be made known when the Bill is under discussion.” From Mr Rhodes : “My pledges not to alter the licensing laws for the next three years given at last election were so emphatic that it is impossible for me to reconsider the question until the end of this Parliament. I am, therefore, not prepared to vote for Sir Robert Stout’s Bill this year, but I regret that the Government and certain other members are apparently trying to prevent the Bill being brought up for discussion.”
