FOOTBALL.

NEW ZEALAND V. QUEENSLAND. The New Zealand football team were accorded an enthusiastic welcome at Brisbane. Reference was made to the noble assistance rendered to Queensland by New Zealand during the heavy floods. The first match between a representative team of Queensland and the New Zealand Rugby Union team was played on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the Maorilanders by 12 points to 3. The weather was extremely hot, and about 7000 people were present. The following composed the New Zealand team :—Fullback, Wilson ; three-quarter-backs, Jervis, Wynyard, and Harper; half-backs, Rutland ' and Bayley; forwards, D’Arcy, McKenzie, Ellison, Cockroft, Lambie, Stuart, Murray, Pringle, and Speight. It is proposed to send four additional forwards to Australia to fill casualties, in order that nothing might be omitted to insure, if possible, a reversal of the result of the last match with New South Wales. McKenzie (Auckland), Watson (Wairarapa), Good (Taranaki), and Oliphant (Wellington) will probably be the men selected.

TIMARU V. WAIHI. The match between Waihi and Timaru firsts came off on Saturday afternoon at Timaru. The weather was very cold. The match was an excellent one; play being for the most part open and exceedingly fast. Waihi made a fine start, scoring two goals within ten minutes of play commencing. The goals were kicked in grand style by Arthur Shallard, one from a mark by Fish, and the other from a penalty kick. With the 7 points thus so quickly put up against them Timaru buckled to with great spirit, and after some first-class passing Austin got over for them, and Cocks kicked a goal. Early in the second spell, through a bit of careless play by the Timaru full-back, Opie got in at the corner flag, aud though Shallard sent the ball over the bar, no goal was allowed. Fast play was again the order of the game, aud a determined rush for the Waihi’s lines, ended in Alf. Boys getting over. Cocks made a fine attempt at goal, but failed, Waihi then got on a rush and swept down to the Timaru goal line, where G. Thompson, the captain, was thrown heavily aud rather seriously hurt He was taken off the ground, and on examination it was found that he had had one of his ribs broken, aud another badly bruised. He was taken home as quickly as possible. On playing again Timaru quickly cleared their lines, but were not to be easily beaten off, and at the end of the game they were close up to the home goal. Waihi thus won the match by 9 points to 7 points. The following is the Waihi team picked to play against the Union club at Winchester on Thursday, 20lh. Moore (2), Opie (2), Stewart (2), Hart (2), Henderson (2), Shallard (2), South, Fish, and Campbell. The following team will play for Temuka against Timaru 2nd on Thursday next at Timaru :—Storey, Brosnahan, J. Anderson, Morton, McCallum, Low, Wakely (captain), D. Anderson, McLean, Findlay, J. Brosnahan, Gaffaney, Rodgers, Marshall, and Henry. Emergencies— Barrett (2), Mulhern, Greaves, Collins, and Sheen. If any of the above cannot play they are requested to let the secretary know at once.
