FOOTBALL.
TIMARU V. WAIIII. The first fifteens of the above clubs met for the first time this season oh Thursday, 22nd iust. The game .vas played at Winchester in the presence of a good number of spectators. Th« ground was in fine order for football, and as both teams play a fast open game, the match proved a most exciting one from a spectator's point of view. Both clubs put a strong team in the field, though Timaru were without the services of two or three good players. Those who took their places, however, were by no means a discredit Jp the team, playing a good game throughout. By the account of the match in the Timaru Herald it is said that Timaru played with eight second fifteen men. This is not a manly way of smoothing over a defeat. The report is not a fairone, as the writer seems to put himself in the position of " pleader " for the vanquished team. These two teams will again meet, the next time in Timaru, bo that the Timaru boys will have a chance on their own ground. Owing to the late arrival of the visitors, play did not commence until a quarter to four. Waihi won the toss and decided to play with the sun behind them. From "the start the Waihi forwards proved too much for their opponents, and for most of the first spell play remained in the Timaru 25's. The Timaru backs, however, made a splendid Btand, and by combined play prevented a score during the first spell In .the second spell the contest appeared much the same as the first. About the middle of the- second spell T. Hart Bequred the ball from a dribbling rush, and scored for Waihi. The kick at goal proved a failure, and shortly after A. Shallard got possession in the Timaru 25, awd almost scored, being collared on the line. Just before the call of time W. Moore, Waihi's full back, had a pot at goal, the ball only falling a foot short of the bar. No other score resulted, Waihi thus winning by 2 points to nil. The game was one of the best that has been played in Winchester, being fast from start to finish. A. Shallard, as usual, played a good centre threes quarter-back for Waihi, while Fish, though out of practice, also played well. W. Moore, at full back, kicked well, and the forwards all showed good form. The Timaru forwards, though much lighter, also played well, Thompson, Austin, Whittaker, and Orr being the best. Of the three-quarters, Boys Bros, were both playing splendidly, and Bird also played a fair game. One great faulty was noticeable, viz., disputing the referee's decision. It would be much better for the captains of the respective teams to discus disputes with the referee, instead of about a dozen players disputing loudly "Yes, it was," "No, it wasn't," etc. Mr R. Morrison acted as referee during the first spell, and Mr J. Anderson, for tlje seconcl spel}. flip following will represent the Tetuuka second in their match with the Pleasant Point second at Pleasant Point on Thursday : Full-back,.D. Grant; three-quarters, Robinson, Greaves, and H. Bryan; halves, Sheen and Hooper; forwards, J. Barrett, Erwood, Barwell, Mulhern, Spillane, G. Collins, Radford, Carr, and Marshall; emergencies, S. Bryant and J. Higgins. The drag will leave Mr G. Yelvin's. shop ftt'2 o'clgc^.
