FOOTBALL.
TEMUKA Ist V. TIMARU 2nd. This match was played at Temuka on Thursday last, and as the visitors had a weak team the local men had an easy win by 11 points to nil. The game was contested mainly within the visitors’ 25 flag, and only on one occasion were they dangerous, when Temuka was forced down. Temuka won' the toss, and Rapsey kicked off against the wind. The ball was well returned, and line out and scrum work followed just on the visitors’ line. Temuka kept up the attack merrily for about fifteen minutes, Morton on several occasions getting almost to the line. From a line out Henry taking the ball well, crossed over and scored. D. Anderson kicked a grand goal from a very difficult angle. Soon after J. Henry, who was playing well, broke away from the line, aud on being tackled passed to Gillespie, who ran round the full back and scored near the posts. The kick, though easy, was not improved on. The first spell was soon ended with Timaru on the defensive. On resuming, the Timaru men came down with a dribble to Story, who relieved with a good kick into touch. Scrums and line out work followed until Timaru were forced. McGuiuness got the ball from a scrum aud looked like scoring, until some one blew a whistle, and he, thinking it was the referee, came back. J. Anderson, neatly taking the ball after it had passed across the ground through all the hands of the backs, wriggled through aud scored. The kick was not converted, aud play was resumed. The game was fought now under the visitors’ goal, and J, Henry came through with a dribble, and scored a second time. He took the kick himself but was not successful. Soon after time was called, leaving Temuka winners by 11 points to nil. The forwards were about oven, but the local backs were superior to the visitors. For the winners, as backs J. Anderson, Velvin, Morton, Low, and Robinson played well, the local full back acting the part of spectator most of the time, never being troubled. Henry, Rodgers, Wakely, and D. Anderson played well forward. For the losers H. JBilton (full back), was very safe, and saved his side often, Shappere and Rapsey were the pick of the others, Shappere and Morton coming into friendly embrace often. Of the forwards Bourn, Philp, Oreemer, and Lough were best, whilst A. Austin had an outing as half-back. Mr W. Moore (Waihi) made a capital referee, and Messrs Lavery and Niall acted as line umpires.
The return match between the Geraldine aud Winchester schools took place in the Geraldine Domain on Saturday. There was a very strong wind blowing all through the game, which somewhat marred good play. The Geraldine boys during the first spell had the wind in their favor, aud Alt. Willoughby secured a try, and shortly afterwards F. Shiers potted a goal for Geraldine. No further score was made. The Winchester were forced down several times. In the second spell the Winchester had the wind in their favor, and the Geraldine were on the defence occasionally. Cannivan and Shallard for Winchester made several good runs, but could not pass F. Shiers, the Geraldine full back. Geraldine were forced down twice and Winchester once in the second spell. The ball was in the centre of the field when time was called. The Geraldine therefore won by 6 points (a try and a potted goal) to nil. For the winners Shiers (2), Willoughby (2), Dean, Scroggie, and Jas. Riordan played splendidly, while Cannivan, Page, Hart, Shallard, and Donnithorne showed up best for Winchester.
