London, Dec. 16
At a meeting of the Free Labor Society a powerful manifesto was issued, to the effect that the unemployed difficulty was solely the result of the leaders of the new unionists recklessly ordering strikes. Dec. 18. The London County Council have agreed to pay wages at rates recougnised and in practice as approved by the Trades Unions.. Washington, Dec. IG, President Harrison declares that Protection has failed, owing to labour refusing to share employers’ risks. Sydney, Dec. IG. The secretary of the Broken Hill Defence Committee have received a letter fi'om Mr Ben Tillet, conveying a resolution passed by the London Dock Labourers’ Union, protesting against the unjust sentences recently inflicted on several of the members of the committee. Dec. 17. Sir J. W. Downer has protested against the importation of unemployed from Broken Hill, characterising the action of the New South Wales Government as unfriendly and unprecedented. Sir G. R. Dibbs reminded Sir J. Downer of the vast benefit the Broken Hill mines were tq South Australia, and also pointed out that many men employed there came from that colony. He said that up to the present about 300 men had been sent from Broken Hill. Adelaide, Dec. 16. Mr Playford has directed attention to
the action of New South Wales in sending unemployed into the colony from Broken Hill. The Premier says it is hard to believe New South Wales officials are acting on the authority of Fir G. R. Dibbs, and declares that if the practice is continued, he will refuse to allow the railways to bejused for the purpose.
