The following is the report for the week ending November 8 : Wheat—The market for milling is at a standstill. The prospect in the meantime is far from encouraging to holders. Buyers being satisfied that requirements can be secured as they go along, decline to operate except at a reduction on late quotations, which are now merely nominal, say, for best milling velvet, red straw, and Tuscan, 3s to 3s 3d, extra prime 3s 6d, medium to good 2s 6d to 2s 9d, inferior 2s to 2s 3d, broken Is 8d to Is lOd (ex store, sacks weighed in ; terms.) Oats —Oats are only in limited supply and hardly coming forward, but the market at the moment is somewhat dull. Stocks in Otago and Southland are considered light, barely sufficient for requirements. There is a little demand for shipment. Best stout milling Is lOd to Is lid, best bright short feed Is 9d to Is lOd, medium to good Is 8d to Is 9d, inferior medium Is Gd to Is 8d (ex store, sacks extra ; net). Barley—No business doing. At the Burnside Market on Tuesday the following business was transacted: — Cattle. —141 head of fat cattle were yarded, which proved more than sufficient, several pens being turned out unsold, while prices for those disposed of did not show any improvement on last week’s. Best bullocks brought £7 17s 6d to £8 17s 6d, one or two pens extra heavy £9 2s 6d to £9 12s Gd, medium to good £6 2s Gd to £7 15s, light weights £5 12s Gd to £6, best cows £G 15s to £7 17s Gd, medium to good £5 to £6 7s Gd, light and aged £2 17s Gd to £4 12s Gd. Sheep.—ll6G fat sheep were penned, 200 being merinos. There was no advance on last week, some pens being withdrawn from sale. Best crossbred wethers brought 17s to 18s 3d, medium 14s 3d to IGs 3d, crossbred ewes 13s 9d to 15s Gd, merino wethers 7s 9d to 13s. MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. London, November 6. Alexander’s gross liabilities amount to £383,000. Debtor made no proposals and the estate was ordered to be wound up in the usual way. Mr James Ford was appointed trustee with the assistance of a committee, composed of Messrs T. B. Yanderbyl, Arnold Jacob, and James Whittall. Tallow, mutton, fine, 275; medium, 25s Gd ; beef, 23s Gd. Spot quotation for New YAi’k No. 2 red winter wheat is 96 cents. Sixteen hundred bales of wool were privately disposed of at a price about on a par with the last season’s closing rates. The total arrivals up to date number 83,G00 bales, of which 10,GOO have been sent forward to manufacturing districts. 192,000 bales will be available for the ensuing series.
Mr Trengrousc, butter expert, considers that the prospects of the butter market are of the very brightest. Buyers, he says, are awaiting for consignments and the quantity sent is quite immaterial. As to the quality, he advises that prime factory-made should be sent, and urges producers to adopt the system of branding packages. The largest demand, he points out, is in January and February. Nov. 7. The New Zealand and Australian Land Company have declared a dividend of 8 per cent. Owing to the new protective tariff the French revenue for October was £500,000 below the same month last year. Messrs Baders and WalkerjO? Hudly Castle, Warwickshire, have become bankrupt. Their liabilities amount to £200,000, Last month the imports of the United Kingdom decreased £2,100,000 and the exports £2,400,000. Nov. 8. New Zealand hares are fetching 3s 3d in Leadenhall Market, A shipment of 9000 hares from New South ■Wales brought only 2s Od as they were misshapen. The Times says that the cable messages stating that a noticeable feature of recent Australian finance is the number of French tenders for Colonial loans issued in London, is not true.
The statement that a strong French syndicate were willing to lend the Victorian Government £3.000,000, receiving Scrip in payment, has been received with scoffing ridicule in financial circles in the city.
