THE CANTERBURY SPRING MEETING.
Christchurch, Nov. 8. The weather was dull, though fine, for the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting. The attendance was the largest on record, over 8000 spectators being present when the Cup was run. His Excellency the Governor and suite arrived before the hurdle race, and were leceived by the stewards of the club. The course was in very good order, and the racing all through interesting. In the Hurdle Race T. Sheen an had his collarbone broken through Erin-go-Bragh falling. Westmore got away very badly in the Welcome Stakes, and ran a great colt. Mr S. Powell succeeded in sending the fields away very evenly. £13,420 passed through the totalisator, being £SOO more than last year. The following are the details:

Mr D. Rutherford’s Norton, 12st 91b 1 Mr W. Russell’s Magpie, lOst 81b ... 2 Mr C. Norton caught Magpie in the last twenty yards, and won by a bare half length. Time — 4min 3/sth sec. Dividends £4 9s 6d ; outside, £5. Maiden Stakes, of 2 sovs each, with 100 sovs added, for three-year-olds and upwards that had never won a race of the value of 20 sovs ; 1 mile.

There was a beautiful start. By the time the distance was reached Merrie England and Cynisca were in difficulties, and Crackshot was beaten in the next 100 yards. St. Hippo maintained his lead to the finish, and won by a length and a-half from Dilemma, with Boulanger, who came very fast in the last 150 yards, a similar distance away third, a neck in front of Launceston, Crackshot fifth, Rosefeldt sixth, Cynisca seventh, Merrie England eighth, Morion and Flinders pulling up last.
