SOCIAL AT RANGITATA SOUTH.

The annual social in aid of the Rangitata South School was held in the schoolroom on Friday, the 9th inst., and although not favored with the best of weather the attendance was very good. A departure was made from ordinary socials, and it was left optional to attend either in fancy or plain dress. A good many availed themselves of the former opportunity, and, the room being well lighted up, the numerous fancy dresses had a particularly pleasing effect. The dancing was intermixed with songs and recitations, and a very pleasant and agreeable evening was spent by all. Mr Irwin was the first to open the musical programme with “ Sailing,” and later in the evening ho also contributed “ Eileen Alannah ” and “ Jessie, the Flower of Dumblane.” Mrs Hawkes sang very sweetly, and with good effect, “ 1 Shall Marry my True Love.” Mr Hawkes received loud applause for “ They all love Jack,” and later in the evening was vociferously encored for “ Dear Me, is that Possible,” and responded with “ The Frenchman.” Miss Connal elicited much applause for “Mary of Argyle,” which she sang very nicely. Mr P. Davidson was encored for his comic song “ Not for Sam,” but did not respond. Mr Irwin recited “ Advance New Zealand.” Mr Seales gave two recitations on “ Military Life in India,” which were well received, as was also another given in good style by Mr Hawkes. Mr A. Bisset acted as M.C., and the music, which was excellent, was supplied by Messrs Cadwallader (violin), Taylor, 2 (acccrdeon), Hawkes, and Miss M, Taylor (piano). _ Miss Connal kindly accompanied the singers. Too much praise cannot be given to Mesdames Taylor and Cadwallader, especially the former lady, who worked assiduously to make the affair a perfect success, and both are to be congratulated on the results attained. Mr Taylor kindly lent a piano for the occasion.
