The Spring Meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey commenced on Thursday last. The weather was delightful, the attendance good, and everything passed off most eujoyably. The various officials performed their duties most satisfactorily to all. Investments on the totalisator were not so large as in 1891 by £973, only £1617 being put through Messrs Mason & Roberts’ machine during the day. The following are the results ;

The only starters. Time, Imin. 25sec., which was not credited, private watches making it 10 seconds slower. Totalisator, £26 ; dividend, £2 17s.

SECOND DAY, The weather on the second day was fine, but there was a slightly overcast sky, and a fitful wind from the east. The attendance was not large, but there was a fair sprinkling of ladies in the grand stand, and quite a concourse of cash fielders. The day’s racing was remarkably good, the finishes in every instance being close,and the arrangements were again excellent. The club is to be congratulated upon the punctually in which the various events were got off. The first race was started by Mr Teschemaker in the absence of Mr Guinness, and in the other events Mr A. G. Cox acted as starter, wielding the flag most creditably. In the Ladies’ Bracelet, in which he had to ride, Mr H. Gardner acted as his substitute, and got his field away well. The total investments for the day on the totalisator were £1465, as against £2173 last year. The win of of Liberator in the S.C.J.C. Handicap was particularly popular, Temuka’s representative running most gamely, and being brought to the front in the pink of condition. There were no casualties. A really fine race, the first two horses running so closely that the issue from some points of view was doubtful. Had Prime Warden come a little sooner the result might have been altered.
