GERALDINE COUNTY ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
The annual general meeting of the above Society was held at the President’s office, Temuka, yesterday afternoon. Present —Messrs A. M. Clark (President, in the chair), E. Cutten, F. Dignan, and J. Murray. After routine business, the chairman reported that unavoidable circumstances had caused the annual meeting to be postponed. The society was in a flourishing condition. No less than 148 general licenses were issued during the past season, 9 to ladies, 18 to boys, and 28 to visitors. Many of these had been issued to strangers, which showed that the society indirectly helped to advertise the district, for those who came to fish could not help but notice the beauty and fertility of the district. The Government in November last suggested that a number of the local acclimatisation societies should amalgamate, but this society strongly objected, as it was thought a local society could deal with local requirements better than a society 150 miles away. Last year the society endeavored to arrange for the netting of the Mackenzie lakes. The preliminary arrangements were entered into, but after a time the Marine Department vetoed the idea. The council were unanimously of opinion tliat although no profit would accrue the first year, eventually they thought the fish supply from there would be very acceptable. During the season quail had been introduced, and were doing well. Some few thousands of brook trout had also been introduced into ponds at Albnry, and would shortly be available for distribution. Several pheasants introduced had not done well, the few hatched having died. He had pleasure in congratulating the society upon its firmly-established position.
The balance-sheet showed tl’o total receipts to have been £3QO Is, including a balance from last year of £163 Gs. The principal items of expenditure were; Brook trout, quail, and pheasants, £23 Is 5d ; opening bar, £8 18s ; honorarium to old secretary, £lO 10s ; ranger, £0; subscription towards Maori fishing case, £10,10s; and sundries, amounting in all to £76 0s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £230 0s 10d.
