TEMUKA ROAD BOARD

The regular monthly meeeting of the above was held on Tuesday. PresentMessrs J. Talbot (chairman), C. Bisset, W. Snell, J. Woodhead and J. Fraser. correspondence. Correspondence was read as follows : From Mr O'Halloran, asking that a portion of the canal drain might be cleaned out, subject to usual conditions. — The overse3r had attended to it. From Messrs Woodhead and Son, notifying that they had applied for a slaughter-house license at Milford and asking if the board had any objection.— From Mr T. Oliver, making a similar application in respect of a section at Milford. —The overseer to report to the County Council. From Mr E. Brown, quoting sizes and prices of bridge timber.—The relative merits of Alford Forest and West Coast timber were discussed, and the overseer was requested to procure a few thousand feet of the former as a trial. From Mr W. E. Barker, making an application for the insertion of his name on roll for sections enumerated. —The alterations had been made. From Mr James Patrick, Winchester, asking to have his name placed on the roll in respect of section 28, the property of Mr Young.—Mr Young consenting, the overseer was authorised to make the alteration. A petition was received from a number of ratepayers holding fishing licenses praying the board to replace the footplank at the end of Findlay's road, so as to give access to the riverbed. —The overseer to have the same done. From Mr A. M. Clark, in respect of the formation of a road through Riverslea estate. —The overseer to report. From the clerk to the County Council, stating that the objections made by the board to the fords, etc., at Waitohi, in connection with the water-races, had been referred to the local committee who have charge of the same. From the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, asking for information as to the amount required for charitable aid purposes in the Temuka Road Board district for ensuing year.—The clerk to reply that the past expenditure will probably be maintained.

The property tax commissioners notified the number of sections standing in the name of the board, with their valuations. The chairman said that Mr R. Thomas had applied for the cleaning of part of Penny's drain upon the usual terms. —The overseer to attend to same. Mr W. Mason applied for a little shingling on a road leading to Geraldine from Orari, also for the formation of fords across water races on Rangitata Plains, and further, for improvements to a road leading to Mr Adam Edgar's. Mr Snell explained that some of the work was badly needed, as old tracks had been fenced in.—The overseer was ordered to report upon the same for the information of the County Council, as some of the work belonged to that body. The clerk of County Council forwarded forms of abstract of receipts and expenditure, which it would be necessary to forward at earliest convenience to the council.—The clerk to attend to same. INTERVIEW. Mr J. M. Naughton waited upon the board in reference to an application he had made for a road leading to his section at Smithfield. He had been referred by the board to the Public Works Act upon the subject, but when he made enquiries from the Minister of Lands, he was told that any amount accruing from sales of land in the district had been expended upon roads, and that he must now apply to the Road Board to give him a road. It would only be necessary for the board to buy half-an-acre of land for the purpose. The position of the place was explained by the overseer, and chairman. j Mr M. Naughton trusted the board I would see its way to grant his application, but in the meantime asked that the board would make some arrangement to give him access from the riverbed, so that he could get his crop thrashed, The legal position of the board in the matter was discussed, but no resolution was passed further than that the overseer was instructed to write to the Minister of Lands upon the subject and report to the board.

" Sir, —I have the honor to report for the past month as follows ;—Tenders have been invited for Contracts No. '18; also for painting the dwelling at the pound. Contract No. 41, formation of part oj the North Orari Road, is completed and passed for payment. During the month tenders were invited for cleaning part of the drain by Education Reserve 1211, and a] so for cleaning the drain on Badham's Road and road by Boyd's; for the latter work the tender of V. Buckley, at Is (id per chain, was accepted, but as he is not proceeding with the work I conclude that he has thrown up the contract. The tender of R. Roberts, at Is (5d per chain, was accepted for the drain by Education Reserve 1211, and the work is now about coniu]ej,ed. Shingle repairs have been done to the ICakahu Road and Boundary Road. The bridge by Elkis's has been temporarily strengthened to render it safe for traction engines. A decayed wooden culvert at the junction of the Epworth Road >m<\ Main Suutk Iluitd has been taken up and replaced wi£h pipes. The ford pn .Langr jdge's Road is now being done. Fifield, £3O 16s; J. Cain, £ls Is 7d (accepted). Contract No. 49—Painting Pound I dwelling house—J. Cooper £7 15s; A. Surridge, £6 7s Gd ; Bates & Co., £o 15s I (accepted). ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £B6 3s 9d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
