SABBATH AND SUNDAY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Yer correspondent wha signs himsel’ Mystified does seem tae be a bit mystified, an’, judgein’ by his last production, he maun be a wee thochtie conceeted as weel. Fancy him thankin’ a lot o’ fouk for writin’ tae yer paper for his edification, an’ them only writin’ to air thar ain crochets ! He says Candid maun ha’e a guid library, an’ that he wants tae lat fouk ken he has it. If Mystified had a guid library he micht want fouk to ken, tho’ he cudna mak’ as guid use o’t as Candid seems tae dae. Syne he tells us that H.G. wad mak’ a splendid minister for a country village, but he disna tell us by what sort o’ mystical reasonin’ he comes tae the conclusion that bein’ self-contradictory an’ artlessly ramblin’ awa’ frae his subject are splendid qualifications far a minister. I think the insinuation is a gross insult tae ministers o’ a’ denominations, an’ i’ I waur a minister I wad be tryin’ tae find oot wha Mystified is, an’ whaur he hides, an’ ca’ in on ’im for an explanation wi’ a blackthorn stick i’ ma hand. Book Agent, not bein’ mystified, was maybe able tae read atween the lines o’ the letter he replied tae, an’ oonderstand that his answer wasna uncalled-for impertinence. Onybody strictly acquainted wi’ history kens weel enech that it was the Roman Catholic Kirk that changed the Sabbath frae the last tae the first day o’ the week (I say Roman Catholic for distinction, because a’ body ca’s their KirtCatholic Kirk), but why tb« ■ ; beneficent on the thlm on tho ither is anither Mystery that Mystified wad tae explain. If the Kirk had gi’en us the Sunday without takin’ awa’ the Sabbath shq wad ha’e daen something we midif ft been thankfu’ for that wad help tfte solve the unemployed difficulty. The passin’ o’ a compulsory Aucht Hours’ Labor Bill an’ the strict observance o’ twa Sabbaths an’ a Sunday ilka week wad dae awa’ wi’ nearly a' the fash we hae.—l am, etc., Caledonian.
