TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—A' the ither Caledonian Societies Jhat I ken anything aboot tak an interest in,furthering education, wi' scholarships an ? the like. . But it looks like our Temuka freends cud dae naething but'gourmandeeze and guzzle. Wha ever heard tell o' a feed like that whilk you describe in this day's paper bein' eaten in Caledonia ? We maun alloo that wehave aye haen a hankerin' aifter a horn o' gude whiskey, but we have never been gi'en to great eatin', bein' aye content wi' a bit o' crowdy, an' that's the way we are the gude men we are, an' no like the f ushianless craturs who canna content themselves without gettin' a bit o' a dead beast to eat. Noo, Maister Editor, I would like you to tell the .Temuka folk wha wad like to be thocht Caledonians that if they dinna mend their ways an' try tae dae some gude, they may as weel eheenge the name o' their society. " Caledonia, stern and wild,", canna thole tae be represented by men wha can dae naething but eat and drink like a lot o' glaiket Englishers.—l am, etc., A Sprig o' the True Heather. Temuka, Dec. Ist, 1891. [The money of the Caledonian Society was not spent on the dinner. Everyone present paid for his own ticket.—Ed.]
