AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In returning from Timaru to Kangitata this morning I had a rather unpleasant experience. When crossing the Opihi bridge, my horse happened to shy at some horsemen who were crossing the river underneath the bridge, causing the trap to strike against the side of the bridge and upset. Luckily, however, I managed to escape and secure the horse by the head, but had it not been for the timely assistance of two men (unknown to me) my trap must have been smashed to pieces, for the horse was struggling violently to free itself. As these two men are unknown to me, I would feel exceedingly obliged if you would insert a small " local" in your paper in reference to the accident, and tender to them my giucerest tlmuka for their timely and

valuable assistance. I might state that the horsemen whose horses had caused the accident showed a very unfriendly spirit, for when called on they rode on, offering no assistance. Hoping you will oblige, I am, etc., Robert Irwin. Rangitata South, Nov. 2, 1891. [We have pleasure in inserting Mr Irwin’s letter, which will do instead of the local.— Ed.]
