FOOTBALL.
STAR (TIMARU) V. JUNIORS (GERALDINE.)
An interesting game of football was played at Geraldine on Monday last between the Star Football Club, Timaru, and a Geraldine Junior team. J. Findlay captained tbe former, and J. Colbert the latter The local team were far heavier than their opponents, but from the play it was easily seen that the Geraldine did not understand the game nearly so well as the Star After some hard play on both sides, tbe result was Star 5 points (two tries and a goal from a try), Geraldine fqur points (four tries. For the Star J. Bagust secured two tries, tbe second of which was converted into a goal by hf. Anderson, W. Strachan securing tbe other. J. Colbert, J. Clouston, and H. Morrison (2), obtained tries for Geraldine. No goal was kicked from any of them, Colberfc taking the kick in' each case. For the Star Thompson, > Marshall and 0. and W. Holmes were conspicuous among the forwards. J. Findlay for his excellent collaring as three-quarter and J. Bagust half-back and H. Anderson fall-back, played well. In the Geraldine team F. Taylor fullback, was conspicuous for taking the ball well and punting, which often relieved bis side, H. Morrison as halfback played a sterling passing game. H, Taylor was invaluable in the scrums, and G. Macdonald in the line out. E. Stonehouse also played well, while J. Colbert relieved his side by some good runs, closely followed by J. Mundell, who played a ‘ good gams as threequarter. Messrs E. Strong and' Hooper umpired for Geraldine and l imaru respectively, while Mr B. A. Macdonald carried the referee’s whistle. The visitors were entertained at the Geraldine Hotel, and left for home at 9.30 p.m.
At Dunedin on Saturday a match was played on the Carisbrook ground between the Chiistehnrch aud Pirates Football Clubs. Christchurch had the best of the game for a while, bufcthe Pirates then assumed the offensive and ultimately won the game by 10 points to t. On the same date Merivale (Christchurch) met the Alhambra (Dunedin) in the Otago Caledonian Society’s grounds, the latter winning by 6 points to 8. The display of football is said to have been very good.
