TEMUKA LICENSING ELECTION.

The election of a new Licencing Committee for the Temuka Biding of the Geraldine County provoked a contest ai severe in its way as many of the Parliamentary ones. The nomination of ten candidates, constituting two distinct parties, caused a considerable amount of feeling, and both sides exerted themselves to secure the return of their nominees. Prom an early hour the prohibition eection were astir with vehicles bringing their supporters to the poll, and to all appearance early in the day they must have had a substantial lead of the moderates. Several of the Bisters of the Good Templar lodge worked most energetically, one m particular doing more for the cause ■he Had espoused, in the way of bringing votes to the poll than many a his" would have done in a like petition. The moderate party were not not so much in evidence, at least in Temuka, A good deal of quiet button-holing was done, bat only occasionally did their vehicles appear npeA the scene. The fact of a large horse sale taking place that day caused a number of farmers to come into town, and their presence added to the busy appearance of the place. Towards the afternoon it was rumored that the moderate party were gaining ground, and later the prohibitionists claimed to be in the ajcendant. This was of course mere conjecture, but it was probably, nevertheless, nearly correct. At about seven o’clock the corner near the postoffice was "thronged with people waiting for the declaration of the poll, and much disappointment was evinced when it was stated that there was no prospect of anything being known until the Bangitata returns came in, and these were not expected until about nine o’clock. The crowd were fairly orderly, but some little “ barracking ” wdnt on when the Salvation Army took up their stand near the Crown Hotel. Ore of their number, a candidate on the prohibition ticket, was treated to an unsavory egg, but when -of the females received a share of adother the crowd considered more than enough bad been done, and accordingly “ knocked off.” The returning officer made an unofficial announcement of the state of the poll about 9 o’clock, stating that the returns were subject to revision. The result of the local option poll was not declared until yesterday, when the full returns were announced. When it was known that the moderate party had won there was some slight cheering and the crowd gradually dispersed. The following is the detailed result: — '
