THE GORSE QUESTION.
10 THE EDITOR. Pie, —Tour report of the Geraldine Road Board ratepayers’ annual meeting says—“ After discussing the gorse question it was decided not to make any change in mode of dealing with delinquents.” I do not wish to trespass unduly upon your limited space, but wish to call attention to the very unsatisfactory decision arrived at. It is most unsatisfactory, especially to those who are offenders, as indirectly it is an encouragement to them ta allow the nuisance to assume large dimensions. In one or two instances offenders have been proceeded against successfully, but unfortunately the matter has been allowed to drift again. Such half hearted measures, it is needless to say, are quite inadequate to stamp out this intolerable nuisance. There is no apparent reason why the Road Board should hesitate about enforcing so simple a duty as that of clearing their roads from such a pest, Offenders have only to realise the gorse has to be cleared and they will clear it, and until they do so many of our roads will remain a disgrace to the district. It is unfair to proceed against one or two and not against the others, so the simplest and easiest method would be to proceed against all offenders if after due notice they fail to clear it. The question will have to be seriously considered and effectually dealt with by either the present or some fml ure board, and if our present members would courage ously grapple with it they would be entitled to and receive the thanks of the ratepayers they in all other respects so ably repiesent. —lam,&c , G.
