TEMUKA SECOND FIFTEEN F. WAIHI SECOND FIFTEEN.
The above jtnatch, in which consider* able interest was evineed* took place on Saturday last, at Waihi. ; . The Temuka captain (Goldstone),: losing the toss kicked off. Moore returned smartly, and after loose, scrum .work Storey punted smartly intoi tOnch, Scrum followed scrum from the'throw jin, and, play bung dangerously in the visitors’ .25 till McKinley, headed a good rush up the field, to ; be stepped iby South* A series of hand balls followed, .‘and again the Temuka forwards* : headed by Henry, carried a dribble into the- home team’s territory. The ball waa .quickly returned tb the centre of the, field, where a free kick was granted -to Temuka, only to be followed by .a similar advantage for Waibi. Uninteresting scrum andline Wfprk followed, in which Temuka, McAuliffe (whose services in thejiner, out; were invaluable) and Duncan, : asserted their supremacy. McKinley, once more to the fore, headed a good rush, to be smartly stopped by Bryan, who all along played a plucky game, collaring admirably.. . Waibi cleared their line, and short runs by Me Auliffe and Hawke gained ground for Temuka. (Good work followed, put in by Harte, i South, and McKinley, when play was icentred in the middle of the field. From the : ensuing scrum Goldstone, a sterling forward <and cool player, aided by Henry, carried a dribble into Waihi’s quarters. Once more was the ball returned, and good work was put in by Meecham, Goldstone, Wakeley, and Morton, when a determined rush by the Waibi forwards forced Temuka back over line. /°n unfortunate accident s happened to D. McCaskill, who in pluckily stopping a scouring rush waj thrown,, against the post, and retired. Oneof/the best runs of the day, by Goldstqnq, was cut short by South in Waihi’s 25 1 After some good passing between McLean, Storey, and Hawkes, halt time was called, without any score being credited to either side. Play was resumed by Waibi kicking off, and uninteresting scrums following. Some useful foot work was shown by Goldstone, and then ensued good runs by South, who was plentifully fed, and by Duncan, who was working honestly. Wakeley got across the line from a pass forward, but was called back. Goldstone punted out, and from the throw in Waibi, by a compact rush, carried the ball up the field until A. Moore, evading the full back, gpt in near the posts, no increase resulting. Flay was resumed, and line work and scrums followed, when the Temuka forwards wakened up, and Goldstone had a long shot at goal, the ball falling .short. Seme good passing and dribbling folio wed, when McKinley,, A usljn., and Goldstone showed op conspicuously at a dribble, and South, who took the ball very cleverly, put in some good work. Soon after McKinley passed to Hawke, who .ran round South and scored for Temuka amidst applause. Owing to a misunderstanding by Storey Temuka were allowed to take the kick at goal under protest. From the 'kick put Waibi charged up the field, and Temuka, by good forward play* kept the, ball in the home 25, where Goldstone. in the last minute, following up hia : kick, got in cleverly behind the posts,, and added the major point, thus, winning the game by 4to 1. The, teams, were very evenly matched, but much erratic plhy, and profuse and needless appealing and, taking, were sadly conspicuous among the home team. Mr F. Sballard umpired by; Waihi, and Mr E. S. Smith for Temuka. As a referee Mr T. Harte gave every satisfaction.
