At a meeting of Unionists at Barcaldine the freedom of contract was rejected by 1100 votes, only nine being recorded in favor of it.
{ Four hundred non-Uoioais Is have Arrived at Rockhampton and gone on to Barcaldine undisturbed. The Blacks!! 1 Unionists have taken a ballot on the question of freedom of contract,, the result being 160 against and only 4 in ifavor of it.
PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
The adjourned annual meeting of ■the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Saturday afternoon. Mr E. T. Rhodes (the president) occupied: the chair, and ithere were 22 , other members of the association present. SHEEP STEALING. A letter from Mr W. B. Howell was read, stating that he was deputed by the Canterbury Earners’ 00-opera-itive Association to ask the association ■to form a stock protection association, as something ought to be done to prevent, sheep otealingirr-Referred to |the working committee, ! ANNUAL BE PORT, I The annual report was to the effect itbat there had been a slight falling off !in the entries last year,. The result jwas, on the whole, satisfactory. The 'horse parade; ;was a great success. (Though there was a falling off in. laheep the quality was excellent, especially those of Messrs Tripp, Hoare, Smith, and Clark. Draught horses I were equal in .quality to former years. After dealing with other exhibits the ireport stated that the shew was a financial success, the takings at-the gates being larger than on previous years, and the committee had authorised the expenditure, of £BS on roofing and painting the luncheon booth. Thanks were due to the N.Z.L, and jM.A, Company, N.Z. Insurance Company, National Mortgage and Agency (Company, Messrs G. and T. Young, Grade, Maclean, and Co., N.Z. Shipping Company, Messrs Hurst and Son, solicitors, and cab proprietors, Messrs AEG Rhodes, M.H.R. E T Rhodes, J Ballantyne, G H Rhodes, A M j Clark, M Connolly, . J Einlayson, !E Fergussjn, R Bowie, T Price, and W Waddell, who gave pieces of plate and medals to the valae of £7B, Thanks were also due to the class j stewards, and Messrs Qracie and ! Maclean for selling the privileges without charge, and Mr Granger for auditing the accounts,
The balance-sheet showed that the year bad commenced with a balance of £l5B 18s sd; that the receipts from ;subscriptions had been £142; entries, ;£lt>B 17s 6d; donations, £BO 10s; privileges, £72 10a; gate money, £204 16s 6d ; catalogues and proceeds horse parade, £B2 4s 4d; total, j£Bss 17s 9d. Among the expenditure were many very small items; the largest sum being paid out for prizes, £383 16s. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Mr B. T. Rhodes was re-elected , president, Mr ‘ Orbeli vice-president, Mr Balfour treasurer, and the following gentlemen the committee:— : Messrs J Campbell, A IVL Clark, R Davie, E Elworthy, J Goldie, G Lyall, J Guild, R Irvine, E Kelland, J Mitchell! D McXiaren. J King, W Stevenson, J Murray, J Austin, A C Pringle, G H Rhodes, T Teschemaker. G Talbot, Quinn, W Hay, J Struthers, A Wyliie, and J S Rutherford. MEMBERS PRIVILEGES. Mr A O Pringle moved—That the annual subscription ticket shall admit of the subscriber and his family.”— This was opposed by Mr McLaren and lost, only five voting for it FINANCES. It was reaoLed to place £BSO on fixed deposit in the bank, and the meeting adjourned.
