GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held ycstsrcay. Present —Messrs W. Halfour (chairmen), W. B. Howell, R. J. M Barker, and J. Oui^d.

The chainzun in the course of his romarkt stated that the survey for the Levels Downs water supply had bean completed to the Washdyka Gorge, the area served was about 57,000 acres, and the cost was estimated at £7OOO. Mr Guild repored that be had seen Meisri Edgar and Frew, Temuka, and they persisted I in their protest against being included in tin W.sitohi water district. From their point of view it would be an injuioe to force them to take the water. It was agreed that th< petition asking for the water should be imt round again to be s'gied afresh, omitting the names of those two settlers. The chairman referring to the maitrr, Mr Marchant explained the dispute between Mr Kelman aud Mr Shaw about division of water, and he was authorised to attend to Mr Shaw’s com plaint. The engineer reported as follows" The accepted tenderer for the Waitohi headrace found his price was much 100 low for the work, and therefore could not go on with it. The contract was acoordingiy let to the next higher tenderer who has made a commencement. The Levels Downs water supply survey with report and estimate of cost was completed on the 23rd ult. The ratepayers in the district are anxious to meet to discuss it.”

On the rangers’ report* a discussion took place on complaints from ratepayers in the Bangitata district, that they, who had no wild gone on their land, had to pay for the ranger’s work in cutting gorse out of the race on a certain property. —The council agreed that the clearing of growing gorse did cot pioperly some within the ranger’s duty. From the same district came b complaint that a certain ratepayer had 100 pigs in a paddock beside the race, and they were rooting it up and fouling the water.

Mr Bisset waited on the council to ask for himself and Mr Stewart for a supply of water from the Orari-Bangitata races to an education reserve outside the district, below Newlande—To be granted if no legal difficulties are met with.

A letter from the Waimate County Council stated Messrs McLaren and Biworthy had been appointed to confer with, the council with respect to tbo taking of water from the Pare ora on the south side. —The chairman was authorised to meet the committee, and to offer certain terms of agreement for the benefit of both patties.
