News has been received of a violent assault and robbery in the Wairoa South district. The victim, a feeble old man of 76, a farmer, named Wm. Bitch, was enticed last night out of bis house to a lonely place about a mile fiom any other dwelling and was beaten. His watch and chain were stolen. A young man, Thos. Fry, a laborer, has been arrested on suspicion ef having committed the offence. A young man named John Milne, who was charged recently at the Supreme Court with having attempted to commit suicide, and has been since in the hospital, has disappeared from that institution and cannot be found. Chbistchuech, March 25. Last night the cashbox, containing £3O, was missed from the Junction Hotel, Halswell. Early this morning Detective O’Connor arrested a re-spectably-connected young man, named William Marshall McDowell. Part of the money was found in his possession. The cashbox, with the remainder, was discovered buried in his garden. He was remanded. Westpobt, March 26. Frank DeEonza, an old miner in this district, was accidentally drowned in the Mokinihinui river yesterday.
