A SOUTHLAND BABY FARM.

Inteeoaegill, March 25,

A sensational affair is reported from Winton. It is alleged that a woman resident there has been noticed to leave home on several occasions, generally returning with a baby. The other day a child in her keeping died, and as it had not been attended by a doctor, the police made inquiries, and on visiting her house found 13 children in it. March 26.

At an inquest at Winton yesterday re the death of an infant in the I ,house of Mrs Dean the evidence of the latter was to the effect that the infant was six weeks old and was brought from Caversbam on the 9th. It then had a cold and got gradually worse, despite the use of medicine, and died. In the house she had eleven children, from six weeks to two and a-half years, and two of eleven and fifteen years. With herself and husband they occupied a house 12 x 24 with lean-to. The medical evidence showed that death was due to natural causes—inflammation of the valves of the heart and congestion of the. lungs —and a verdict was given accordingly, but with a rider that the premises are entirely inadequate to the purpose for which they were used. The coroner was asked to lay the suggestion before the proper authority.

A Sculling match for £25 and the championship of Otago took place between A, Palamountam and G. Davis at Dunedin on Wednesday, and resulted iu a rather easy victory for Davis.
