TEMUKA RIFLES.

There was a good attendance at the parade of the Temuka Eifles last night. After inspection by Lieut. Findlay, the men were exercised in a number of company movements, which were g »ne through very steadily. Prior to dismissal Lieut. Findlay stated that he had received the badges for those of the corps who had qualified as marksmen. These were Sergts. Whitehead and Hobbs, Corporal Watt, and Privnte Sim. He bad pleasure in preeentiDg them with the badges. He then reminded the company that they wre required that evening to elect a capUin id plica of Captain Hayhurst, rfs:gned. The position was an impnrtont one, and he hoped that rmy selection made would be unanimous. He himself had bter, asked to fill the position, and he fully appreciated the proposed compliment. He would be glad to receive a Domination for the vaeancy. Corporal Leveos moved, and Private Beri seconded—" That Lieut. Cutten be elected captain." Lieut, Findhy said it gave him p!e«sure to-receive such a nomination. Lieut. Cutten had displayed great interest in the company, and had taken great pains to qualfy himself as an officer. The motion wns then put aod carried unanimously with applause. Lieut, findlay said that this election would cause a vacancy, and it would be as well to tied an officer in Lieut. Cutten's place. Private Sim moved and Sergeant Olinoh seconded " That Sejgeant Whitehead be elected Lieutenant." Lieutenant Findlay said this wbb also a nomination that gave j him much pleapure. Sergeant Whitehead was one of the hardest working members of the Company, and should they elect him he felt sure be would prove himself a trustworthy officer. The motion on beiog put waß carried unanimous'y. The commanding officer then drew attention to eeveral arrangements that it would be necessary to make prior to the Oaruaru encampment. He requested the men at next parade to bring in their legglogs,aod haversacks and hoped there would be a full muster and a punctual one, as he expected Colodbl Gordon to t p present. It was arranged to send to Major Newall a letter of farewell on the occasion of the severing ©f his connection with the Bth Ctnterbury battalion, and to accompany the letter with a slight ttstimould). Lieutenant Cutten returned thanks for the honor they had done him in electing bim as their paptain, He should do his utmost to do prpdit to their porps. Arrangements were made for re.crqit drill every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and the parade wag dismissed,
