THE REDUCED POSTAGE.
Sydney, Jan. 81. New South Wales did not act in the same manner as South Australia and Victoria, because, recognising the necessity of observing the terms of the existing convention until properly terminated, they did not send any correspondence at the iate via France and Italy, consequently New South Wales is not affected by the French surcharge. Melbourne, Jan. 81. The Postmaster-General has cabled to the London Post Office, requesting protection against the French surcharge, There is a feeling that a difficulty has been caused by New South Wales standing out of the arrangement and making • demonstration in the matter. Adelaide, Jan. 30. The Postmaster-General has received a cable message from the English Postal Department to the effect that the reduction of the letter rate through Europe has proved most embarrassing, France declares herself bound by legislation, based on the agreement arrived at in: 1883, to charge all letters double deficiency at the old rate, and as Italy will probably do the same the London postal authorities therefore suggest the revocation of the new rales. The Government, after discussion, decided to revert to the original rates so far as France and Italy are concerned.
