MR GOSOUES AT LEEDS

London, Jan. 29. Speaking at Leeds Mr Goschen, Chancellor of the Exchequer, sail he would be glad if it was possible to persuade the Colonial Government to modify the extrema attitude taken up by them with regard to the taxation of British goods imported into Australia, Referring to Baring Brothers’ disaster he said that a fearful financial catastrophe, risking the deposition of London as a Banking centre, was only averted by the skin of their teeth.and was mainly due to the signal service of Mr Lidderdale, the Governor of the Bank of England. The hanking reserve was, he thought, inadequate,compared with their gigantic liabilities, and he and theßanks were devising some scheme by which to strengthen the reserves so as to prevent international panics. He warned the Banks and the public of the enormous interest piid in proportion to the reserve held as deposit, Mr Goschen declared himself opposed to the issue ot one pound Bank notes, unless means were taken to prevent the expulsion of gold
