Tee Pia.no.— The first piano was made by Esther Wood, an English monk, about the year 1771, for Mr Crisp, the author of “ Virginia.” , Bacon-Curing. A bacon-curing company, in which the shareholders are principally farmers, has been established at Belfast, near Christchurch. Operations are to begin at once. The choir at the end of the service sang Uio “Te Ueum ” in honor of the occasion.
A Shaky Concern.—A. special meeting' of the shareholders of th Press Company is called for Wednesday next to consider the beat means of raising £20,0§0 of fresh capital. The Press C mpany have wasting money in trying to nrn the Lyttelton Times. This is the resnlr. Well-merited Reward. —Lord Onslow has forwarded a gold medal to Mr Acland, of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, for Mrs Fussell, whom the judges in the small farms competition recommended for some prize for her homestead and dairy, managed by herself and daughter. Farmers Co-operative The movement for establishing a farmers agency on principles similar to that of the South Canterbury cooperative, has taken a definite shape in Invercargill, a prospectus having been issued. Thecapi'al proposed is £50,000 in £5 shares. Business will be commenced as soon as one thousand shares are taken up. The provisional directors are all farmers.
Accident at Football. —Mr Chas. Macintosh, one of the Timaru footballers, while pl ying in the match Timaru v. Timaru v. Temuki on'Saturday, sustained a severe kick on the right leg, which necessitated his removal from the field. He was taken to Mr W. Storey’s shop, where he was attended by Dr Blunden. The injuries are infernal, and will probably prevent him from playing again this season.
Child Mwrder,— The Bishop of Peterborough has been calling attention to the great increase of child murder by Englishwomen. It is horrible to think that the mothers of England should be infamous throughout the world for child murder. The chief causes are two. One to get rid of the child and the other to obtain insurance money. Both arise from grading poverty- The same condition in the colonies would just as suredly produce the same results.
San Francisco Mail. —At last the San Francisco M«il Service is in danger. In reply to the New Zealand authorities the New South Wales Government have signified their intention not to subsidise it any longer. The American Government have in contemplation g'ving it a subsidy, but nothing is known yet. The New Zealand Government have telegraphed to America to know what is to be done in the matter, and if America will not assist it is said that the New Zedaod subsidy will be withdrawn, and that the service will cease in November next.
Presentation —Miss Buck, who has for some time past held the position of mistress of the Beltijld school, was, upon her leaving ike ■.chool to t-ike a position in North Canterbury, the recipient of a souvenir of the esteem and respect in which she is held by her late pupils. The memento took the shape of a handsome epergne with a centrepiece and three branches, all in ruby-colored glass, the centre-piece being reflective. The gift is h very pretty one, and is especially valuable to the recipient, as conveying to her the kindly feelings and good wishes of her late scholars.

Furious DRiyiMot. Amm mined MaTIhus was driving out of Tiraam last week, and at Maori HiF cune into collision with Mr LeOren’s buggy, in which there were a couple of ladies and a child, the child being thrown out and much hurt. Mr Malthus was driving at a furious rate, and so great was the collision that a parcel’ flew from his own vehicle into the buggy, and that Mr LeCren’s horse was thrown down. Mr Malthus, ho veyer, did n< t wait for change, but continued his caree l mtdly until hs reached Pleasant Point, whore he discovered that his horao hari been working with only one trace. He will appear before the Court.
Belfieid School. —The monthly meeting of the Beifield School Committee whs hr-ld in the achooVoom, on Saturday evening, June 21st, all the members being preseent. After routine, the teache.C report was read, which showed the aver <ge attendance to be only twenty-five. The matter of the irregulai attendance ot some of the children was talked over, and the chairimn was directed to take aieps to enforce the proper attendance. Tlie teacher staled that a large map of Australia was required for the better teaching ef geography. The committee directed the chairman to write to the board for one. An account for cleaning the achool was passed for payment. Mr Ford the chairman, was appointed visitor f>r the month, and also to pass the work now m course of construction. Mr Willey was directed to see that two panes of glass were put in the teachers’s house ; a'so to h ive flushing put round the chimney, and to present bill for same at next meaning. Two letters were read from a candidate intending to apply for the position of teacher. This being all the business, the meeting terminated.
Fall Over a Precipice. — Miss E Iloas, daughter of Mr A. H. R os / M.H.R, for Roslyo, and Mr VV. Watkins’ of the D.1.C., met with a rather serioul accident on Tuesday night. It appear? that they were returning from a visit i 0 Mrs the sister of the young lady who resides at Woodhaqgb, and feoojc a near cut by the footpath leading from Anderson's mill through the Town Belt to Maim JfilJ. When they reached the top of thg hijl tb°y rested for a moment after their steep climb, and, happening to lean against a wire which was stretched across a gap where the rail of the fence was broken away, the wire broke, and they fell over a steep face about 40ft high Mrs Taylor, wife of Mr Taylor, acting town clerk, heard the cries of Miss floss as she fell, and at once gave the alarm, Constable Burnett was sooo on the spot' and foiled both fha victims of the unfortunate accident, whq were sq seriously hurt us to bp pucouscious. The sufferers were takpn to $r Coqghtrpy’s residence, and he foijnd that hofh the ygtirps wore suffering from concussion, of the spine Miss Boss having her face badly lacerated m addition. The Otago Daily Times understands that both sufferers are progressing favorably.
Draughts. The following are the names of the Timaru players in the draughts match between Timaru and Temuka at I'emuka on Thursday evening ; Sergt.-Major Jones, Messrs T. Bussell, D. Stewart, A. Gregg, 0. H. Reid, W. Stokes, A. Austin, and M. Salek. Play will start at 7 o’clock.
Gift Auction at Woodbury, —On Friday next a gift auction of all kinds of farm produce, sheep, fowls, fruit and forest trees, firewood, etc., will be held at the Woodbury schoolroom, m aid of the local Presbyterian Church. The auction will commence at 1 o’clock, and, as an additional attraction, afternoon tea will be provided, A good sum will doubtless be realised.
Doctoring Made East. —There is an ingenious young doctor in a onal district, not a hundred miles from Auckland, who has a large speaking tube from his front door to the side of his bed. Before retiring to rest he places assorted varuiies of pills close at hand, and when rung up at night by an inconsiderate patient he converses with him about his symptom* through the tube, and after making a sleepy diagnosis of the case, rolls two pills down the tube into the expectant mouth at ihe other end, then slumbers peacefully once more.
District High School Concert. The concert in aid of the prizr fund of the District High School, which is announced to take place on Friday next, should prove most successful. Tbs first part w.ll consist of songs, recitations, di Jogues, &c., by the pupils of the sohoo l , and those who have been present at some of their rehearsals, or who remember the very creditable singing on the last prize day will admit that this will prove (at all events to parents) a very enjoyable part of the programs. In the second part favorite local amateurs will sing, and several instrumental selections are promised. A special attraction is provided in the shape of instrumental items by Dt Morris, of Pleasant Point. The whole is to conclude with a well-woru but laughable farce by local amateurs, into which will be introdued ns much harmless fnn as possible. It is to ba hoped that all who hayo the interest of the ecuool at he*rt will endeavor to be present. Primitive alethodist Church, Geraldine.—A 1 cture was delivered in this church on Fnlay evening Ust by the Rev. .S. Po ’er, of G instchurch, on “Primitive Methodism.” Mr Potter is at present canvassing this district for the pu pnso of obtaining donations to the “Jubilee Church Loan and Extemion Fund,”—a fund which is being taised by the Primitive Methodist connection to enable them to lend sums of money (to b« repaid within a given time) to their own people at little or no interest, for building churches and generally extending their cause. There was only a moderate attendance. Mr A. Sherratt occupied the chair. The hetme was similar to that delivered iu Temuka a few evenings previously, a,report of which appeuei in our issue of Thursday last. Mr Potter w»s very attentively lieteued to throughout, and heartily applauded several '’limes during his discourse. The pronouncing of the Benediction terminate 1 the meeting, and at its close some liberal subscriptions to the loan fund were promised.
